Struggle vs FLOW

Struggle vs Flow

In this article, you will discover four simple
steps to create your own luck!

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be “more lucky” than others? Maybe you feel lucky. Congratulations! Or on the other hand, perhaps you feel that lady luck never comes knocking on your door.

I have often wondered what luck is and if there were a way to change my luck. I have spent a lot of time and energy in pursuit of answers to that question.

I grew up in a good, hard working family that never seemed to have much luck. Life was difficult and a constant battle for survival. Money was hard to come by and outside forces were always wreaking havoc on our dairy farm, our animals, and our finances. There were diseases, bugs, floods, and droughts. All outside forces having a very real effect on our quality of life.

Due to thrift, our own garden, a few fruit trees, the cows and chickens we had enough food. At least that is the way I remember it. Birthdays and Christmas were not a time for luxuries or gifts — but practical things like clothes and working boots. Or perhaps a new school uniform. Oh, and by the way the school didn’t have a uniform — it was just cheaper to wear the same clothes every day.

Money was always hard to come by and I learned that in order to get ahead in life I would have to work hard, sacrifice, live with pain and suffering and exert massive effort.

But who says this is true?

There is a huge difference between applying effort to a goal or purpose and struggling to make ends meet. So why are we told so often that it is noble to sacrifice and struggle only to barely make it?

The underlying belief is that life, resources, and even love are scarce and in short supply. That we have to compete with other people for them, to win at all costs and that we have to earn love, respect, and acceptance.

What if this is a lie?

What if life, resources, and love are abundant? Free and all around us? What if we don’t have to struggle at all, but to accept that there is a lack of knowledge about how to live a life of effortless FLOW.

Knowledge seems to be the missing element.

We do have to make choices, sometimes very difficult ones. At the same time is there an alternative to sacrifice, endless hard work and barely getting by?

Could it in fact, be easy? Could we create our own luck? I say YES!

The absence of luck could be referred to as struggle. Struggle is effort infused with negative emotion, desperation and attachment. If we replace the negative association and attachment with positive expectation, certainty, and detachment from outcomes we may experience more ease, peace and FLOW. We will still apply hard work and effort, however, the outcome will be, flow and not struggle.

Most people don’t realize that our life is a reflection of our innermost feelings, beliefs, and attitudes. That means when we change on the inside, our outside results change. This is how what we think and feel in the present moment… determines the outcomes in our future.

Think about it this way: Accepting responsibility for your life means accepting that your destiny is created by you. This means that the struggle you experience is created by you and how you feel about your circumstances. Switch your feelings and you will switch from struggle, to flow. Such a simple concept and yet very profound.

In other words, it is your feelings that make the difference! Your feelings are the key drivers of your actions and your actions are what creates your outcomes in life.

Because we are trained, programmed and conditioned to struggle we often accept this as normal and don’t realize that an alternative way of life is possible. A reality of abundance and effortless flow is not even considered because our conditioning doesn’t even allow us to recognize it.

There is a way out of constant struggle where we create our own luck… Here are the steps:

The first step is to consider that struggle isn’t fait accompli and to identify all the areas where you are struggling. This takes courage and the willingness to accept responsibility, that you are causing the struggle and you have the power to choose something different to move into more flow. Once you accept that, you know with absolute certainty that over time, all struggle can be eliminated from your life.

The second step is to write a list of all the areas of life where you are struggling. Don’t be shy or modest. List them all, even the ones tucked away in the secret corners of your life.

The third step is to prioritize your list to arrive at an order of importance to focus on one area at a time. The best approach is to resolve one area at a time before beginning on the next one. If you try to do too much at once it is easy to become overwhelmed and then give up. Sadly, most people give up before they even really begin. Don’t be one of those people and complete what you begin!

The fourth step is to consider what your underlying emotions are and what your thoughts, innermost feelings, beliefs, and attitudes are towards this one area of struggle. Make a conscious decision to let go of the struggle and to embrace more effortless flow in this area. Take note of any “inner voice” that retorts with fears and doubts if this can even be done. You can do it!

Meditate on it and affirm your choice to become lucky in this area and to let go of any payoffs for the past struggle.

You will find that your feelings shift from agitation, negativity and attachment to peace and serenity. Calm and positive expectation attracts a new, fresh energy that attracts more similar energy into your life.

Once you have transformed this first area from, struggle to flow, move onto the next item on your priority list and repeat the same process. Take responsibility for your feelings and transform them.

Starting today, make a commitment to let go and transform one aspect of struggle per day and be sure to record your progress from scarcity to abundance.

Good luck! Bon chance! Let us know how you get on… XOXO

Flow no Flow

What doesn’t flow is also flow
blocks to flow provide guidance
guidance is invaluable and rare
opinions are everywhere

everyone has an opinion
gleaned from experience + interpretation
do this, do that, don’t do this, don’t do that
worthless!

flow has no opinion
no one can argue with flow
yet so many people insist on going against the flow
or they surrender and float downstream
this is meaningless
for even a dead fish can float downstream

do not be a dead fish

engage with and respond to flow
create flow
follow flow
share flow with others

look for flow no flow
know when to apply force to no flow
and when to let go

Sometimes things don’t flow
because an “attitude” needs adjusting
an expectation needs re-setting

subtle feelings reveal flow
this is void if you are numb
numb is as close to nearly dead as you can get
dead is the total absence of flow

spend time with numb people and you will experience no flow
crazy people have lots of flow… all over the place
subtle wont work on numb
bricks, sledge hammers and massive force are what works

desperate, terror, lost, lonely, sad, angry, happy, are all degrees of flow
they don’t all go in the same direction
some lead up – others lead down
whatever you wont feel – you will suppress
suppression leads to no flow
flow leads to freedom

uncomfortable feelings are not a sign of no flow
they can and often do indicate pending or imminent flow
being comfortable with uncomfortable leads to more flow

freedom is bought with a price
a price most people are not willing to pay
subtle nuances are the realm of mastery
which is acquired through practice

I learn nothing from flow
but sit at the feat of the true master – no flow
when my ego rises and takes over
no flow soon follows

staying humble allows flow leading to flow following flow

I turn off the light
I close my eyes
I do not see black
I see the same thing with eyes open and eyes closed

I see grey with patches of white
like clouds drifting across the sky
flow no flow is everywhere and in everything

ZONE TIPS > Your Feelings Are Not Reliable

Feelings are important to our experience of living as human beings. It is said that all mammals have some feelings; however, as human beings we have the widest range of feelings. Beyond the basic triad of pain, pleasure and numb, we have a lot of nuances to describe how we feel at any given moment — about everything we experience.

When it comes to making decisions, even the most rational, seemingly emotionless decision-makers are, unbeknownst to them, influenced by their feelings — even if they are not consciously aware of them. Even no feeling is a feeling.

Because of past things that have happened to us (both real and imagined) we tend to have conflicting emotions, as well as stacks of misplaced emotions, that get projected onto items, areas, subjects and people that they do not belong to.

If we make decisions based on how we feel, we will often get ourselves into trouble. On the other hand if we ignore how we feel, and make decisions that are based on the ultimate rational logic, we will also get into trouble. So the optimum decision-making method is to balance both rational and emotional factors to arrive at the best outcome possible under the circumstances.

When it comes to working towards a goal or intended outcome, we can be succeeding and making progress, and yet our emotions could be indicating that nothing is working and we are going to fail!  The opposite is also true, where we are doing poorly and yet feel on top of the world.  Most people would think this is not possible, and that surely when going up, one would feel up, and when going down, one would have that dreaded sinking feeling. For a variety of reasons, our emotions get mixed up and we feel the wrong thing at the wrong time.  This leads us to make incorrect assessments and assumptions.

That sounds scary, so what do we do about it? The fastest, easiest and most reliable thing to do is to use statistics and measurements to track your progress.  Then there is no emotion involved and it is simply a matter of “What does the stat show”? An analogy for this is when a pilot is flying a plane in bad weather when they cannot see the horizon. The pilot’s feelings and sense of direction can get so confused by the lack of visual stimuli, that up feels like down and down can feel like up… yikes! How does a pilot handle this phenomena? They fly by instruments.  So, rather than relying on your feelings for your decision-making and assessment of how you are doing, look to your instruments — otherwise known as statistics.

Here are just some statistics that you could measure, record and plot on a graph to show progress and the trend over time (in no particular order):

  1. net worth
  2. bank balance
  3. weight
  4. body measurements
  5. mood level
  6. number of fights with people
  7. days without a fight
  8. number of magic moments
  9. income
  10. expenses
  11. blood pressure
  12. depressed days
  13. inspired days
  14. energy level
  15. total debt
  16. total assets
  17. days you exercise
  18. dates of sexual activity
  19. number of headaches
  20. dollars invested

This list is by no means exhaustive; there are many more items you could track statistics on. We recommend you make your own list and begin tracking stats!

BTW, some people will have feelings about stats and the accountability that comes with them.  These feelings may get in the way of taking action…

Truth

There is a graduated scale from ultimate truth to ultimate untruth. Most people think that a little untruth is OK and tell little lies to others and to themselves. The worst lies are the ones we tell to ourselves – and believe. Why? Because if you believe your own lies – then your perception becomes inaccurate to the same degree.  This is often why many people struggle and work hard only to find that success eludes them…

Think of ultimate truth as being the ultimate accuracy, and the ultimate untruth being the ultimate inaccuracy. The more accuracy – the more flow; so if you want more flow in your life, career or business… go for more truth.

ZONE TIPS > Staying “In The Zone”

Most people know what “The Zone” is and have experienced moments in The Zone in their career, sports, money, etc. Typically these moments are infrequent and unpredictable at best, and most people have no idea how to get in The Zone whenever and wherever they choose.

The Zone feels like a quiet excitement with intensified focus. You feel a sense of confidence, total concentration, and an intense awareness. Your movements are easy, flowing and especially coordinated. You lose all sense of time as if another dimension has been added. You are completely focused on what you are doing and all other thoughts and feelings diminish.

When you “slip” out of The Zone, it feels like the opposite. Nothing flows. Movements are awkward. It is difficult to concentrate.

Here are some tips for getting and staying in The Zone:

  1. Whenever you engage with people, ask yourself if you are in The Zone or not? If you are, great! If not, ask yourself what one thing you could do that would move you into The Zone the fastest with the least amount of effort.
  2. You do not need to be in The Zone all the time, just when you are doing the most important things.
  3. Take time at the beginning of each day to postulate your day, and again at the end of the day to review and contemplate how your day went.
  4. If you focus on what is WRONG and what is not working, you will stay out of The Zone! If you focus on what is RIGHT and what IS working, you will get more of it and migrate towards The Zone and be able to stay there more often.
  5. On the other hand, if you ONLY focus on WHAT IS WORKING and do not consider WHAT IS NOT WORKING, you will become one of “those people” who only see the positive, and not face the counter to positive (what is working), which is negative (what is not working).
  6. If you find that you are worried and in a serious mood – this is not in The Zone! Make an effort to shift into a more playful, light and fun mood. Fun and laughter will have you moving up and into The Zone. Worry and seriousness are certain Zone killers.
  7. If your primary relationship is not working, and you have conflict and disagreements on a regular basis, it will be difficult to sustain long periods in The Zone. The maximum flow comes from harmony. Like music, disharmony is painful!
  8. Take time to choose and organize your environment. Chaotic, harsh and dramatic environments are certain Zone killers. Think about it… if you are sitting on an uncomfortable chair, with bright fluorescent lights with lots of loud noise – how difficult is it to get in The Zone?
  9. Whatever you are feeling on the inside can often lag behind your actual reality. So focus on what is working and make the changes necessary to bring your “inside” in alignment with your “outside.”
  10. Focus on your wins and celebrate your success. If you are part of a team, create a culture of acknowledgement and support.

Clarity

What is clarity and how does it apply to leadership?

Clarity refers to the clearness in what you are thinking and the quality of being clearly expressed and understood. As a leader, the clearer you are, the more effective you are. The more unclear you are, the more inefficient and ineffective your actions will be.

So clarity is critical to effective leadership!

How do you get clear? Is it a case of sitting down and thinking everything through thoroughly? In our experience more mental processing does not lead to more clarity… it leads to a reinforcement of the same thinking that was unclear in the first place!

To get clear requires a process of unthinking or unlearning in which the emotional and psychological layers are peeled off to reveal the core “truth.” This core truth or idea results in a cognition or “ah ha!”

The resultant clarity is palpable. Decisions made from this place are usually the right ones that lead to more clarity and more results.

Definition of FLOW

The definition of FLOW is:

“Being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”

– renowned psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
